Technology Offer of TU Berlin

Coaxial extrusion with simultaneous processing of two materials

Patent #20034/TUB
Background
Extrusion is a well-known process for manufacturing near-net-shape semi-finished products from different materials. With increasing requirements, particularly in the area of hybrid materials, there is a need for processes that can combine different materials within a single forming step. Conventional methods are reaching their limits, particularly in terms of material compatibility and tolerances.
Technical Description
The process uses an extrusion press device with two coaxial pick-up bores and press punches. These allow two different material billets to be pressed simultaneously. The materials are joined in a form-fit and material-locking manner by independently controlling the dies in a forming tool. The device allows variable relative speeds of the press punches, which enables adaptation to the specific forming resistances of the materials.
Possible Applications
Automotive industry: production of lightweight, load-adapted structural components. Aviation: production of complex, load-optimized profiles with hybrid materials. Medical technology: Production of high-precision profiles made from biocompatible materials. Energy technology: Use in electrical conductors and heat exchangers made of various metals.
