Novel Flow Sensor

Patent #17065/TUB
Background
Well-known flow sensors on surfaces require a complete 360° rotation to determine the angular characteristics, which means that flow fluctuations cannot be measured and the measurement setup becomes complex and costly.
Technical Description
A fixed, rotationally symmetrical obstacle arrangement with several pressure measurement positions allows the flow direction and velocity to be determined without mechanical movement of the sensor. For evaluation, differential pressures between adjacent pressure measuring points are calculated. From these pressure measurements, at least one physical measurement variable of the boundary layer is determined, selected from flow velocity and wall shear stress. The pressure measurements can be recorded in a time-resolved manner so that the physical measurement variables can be determined in terms of magnitude and direction as a function of time.
Possible Applications
The technology can be used for robust, cost-effective and reliable flow measurements on a wide variety of objects, such as turbomachinery, automobiles, wind turbines and aircraft. In addition, the technology opens up new possibilities for validating and further developing existing simulation techniques, as it provides flow information that was previously only accessible using complex computer models.
